NOTICE - EXTENSION OF MACHINE READABLE PASSPORTS

KENYAN PASSPORTS

Under the New Constitution, every citizen of Kenya is, subject to the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 30th August, 2011, Part V-Passports and other Travel Documents, entitled upon application, in the prescribed manner, to be issued with a Passport or other Travel Documents to facilitate international travel.

NOTE:

Kenyan Passport or Travel Document issued to Kenyan citizens remains the property of the Government of Kenya. The said documents MUST remain in the possession of its holder(s) until such time as there is lawful cause for its withdrawal, suspension or confiscation.

The Embassy facilitates issuance of the following types of Passports by the Ministry of Immigration and Registration of Persons, Nairobi: 

  1. Ordinary Passport: It is issued on application to any citizen of Kenya.
       Please take Note of the following:
  • The Embassy does not renew 5 year Passports as it has to comply with the current immigration regulations in Kenya which stipulates that following expiry of Passports, arrangements should be made to apply for the new 10 year Passports.
  • Any Kenyan who wishes to change a name in the Passport either occasioned through marriage, divorce or deed poll, should apply for a new Passport.
  • It is advisable to apply for a new Passport six (6) months before expiry of the current one.
  •  The Ministry of Immigration and Registration of Persons ceased to support endorsements of minors (children) on a parent’s Passport to comply with the standards on Travel Documents as set out by the United Nations agency, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). In this case Kenyan children in Israel need to apply for new Passports.
  • Some Applications will require you to have the following:
  • Recommender: This is a Kenyan of sound mind who can certify that you are a Kenyan citizen
  • R. Number: This is found on the Bio-Data Page with your information
  • Two (2) sets for each application together with the other requirements.
      Requirements for a new Kenyan Passport include:
  1. Two (2) fully filled Form 19 and signed (Download Form here…)
  2. Your current Passport and two (2) copies of the Bio-Data Page (i.e. the Page containing your picture and information)
  3. Two (2) Passport sized photos (N.B. showing full face and both ears)
  4. Two (2) copies of your birth certificate (both sides)
  5. Original Marriage Certificate and a copy or original divorce certificate/divorce decree, if you wish to change a name in the Passport.
  6. Fee: NIS. 200.00 payable to the Embassy’s Bank Account.

       Requirements for a Lost or Mutilated Kenyan Passport include:
       Kenyans are advised to take care of their Passports and always to keep copies of the Passport as they come in handy in case of loss or mutilation.

       The following are required:

  1. Two (2) fully filled Form 19 and signed (Download Form here…)
  2. Two (2) copies of your Passport
  3. Two (2) Passport sized photos (N.B. showing full face and both ears)
  4. Two (2) copies of your birth certificate (both sides)
  5. Two (2) copies of a Police Report stating how you lost your Passport.
  6. A Notarized Affidavit for lost Passport (Download the Affidavit here…)
  7. Two (2) copies of your Kenyan Identity Card (ID)
  8. Fee: NIS 525.00 (for Lost Passport) and NIS. 440.00 (for Mutilated Passport) Payable in Embassy’s Bank Account.
NOTE:
An Ordinary Passport shall only be valid for use in all the countries in the world, except for any countries specified in the Passport and shall not exceed 10 years from the date of issue. In case of children, it will not exceed 5 years.
 
 
  1. Diplomatic Passport: Issued to such persons as may be prescribed under various Regulations.

  1. Temporary Passport: It is issued to any citizen of Kenya who for special circumstances cannot travel on an ordinary Passport. A Temporary Passport shall only be valid for use in all the countries in the world, except for any countries specified in the Passport and shall be valid for a period not exceeding 1 year from the date of issue.
  1. Emergency Travel Document: Issued to a citizen of Kenya who is stranded in a foreign country or is being deported. It is only valid to travel to Kenya and other countries of transit and a single journey for a period stated therein.
  1. Certificate of Identity and Nationality: It is issued to a person other than a citizen of Kenya who cannot obtain a Passport from the country of citizenship for the purpose of travelling outside Kenya. It is valid for travel to all countries stated therein and shall be valid for a period not exceeding 2 years from the date of issue.
 
  1. Temporary Permit: It is issued to a citizen of Kenya who intends to travel within the East African Community Partner States or to such States as may be prescribed. A Temporary Permit is valid for a period of 5 years.
 
  1. Travel Document: It is issued subject to the provisions of the Refugee Act, 2006, and any other Humanitarian Convention. It is issued to a refugee and is valid to travel to all countries except the country of the holder’s nationality and shall be valid for a period of 5 years.
